HISTORY:
The IAMA Songwriter Academy (formerly known as the Snowbird Song School) started back in 2008.  The event has been marketed and organized by Ruthie Naccarato of Ricochet House Concerts since the beginning.  This comprehensive, 3 day songwriting workshop was held at Snowbird Resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon  for the  4 years in conjunction with the 20th Anniversary Founders Title Co. Folk and Bluegrass Festival/Snowbird Mountain Music Festival.  Steve Seskin was our original instructor, later joined by Craig Carothers and several other national and regional touring songwriters who presented additional workshops  (Kate MacLeod, Catie Curtis, Ellis, Kort McCumber, James Moors, Wil Maring, Mitch Barrett, Dana Hubbard and Russ Chapman).

Kate MacLeod officially joined us as our anchor instructor and facilitator in 2012 and vows to stay with us for many years to come! IAMA thanks you, Kate!!

In 2014 we will be joined by the legendary, John McCutcheon!

This event was officially re-named the IAMA SONGWRITER ACADEMY in November 2011.  All details of this program now fall under our own IAMA umbrella.  At present, Ruthie Naccarato remains the chair and coordinator for this event.

The event will now be held annually each summer in conjunction with the Utah Arts Festival at the Salt Lake Public Library.  Instructors will vary from year to year to add variety and bring new ideas and expertise to our new and returning students.  Over 100+ songwriters from Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Idaho, Massachusetts and Ohio have joined us for this event in previous years.  Many of our students have gone on to produce first class recordings and build brilliant songwriting careers for themselves.  (Alicia McGovern, Morgan Snow, John Davis, Mary McAdams, Beth Desombre, Jen Hajj, Karsyn Robb, Michelle Moonshine, Utah Slim, Rob Harmon, Chris Orrock, Otter Creek  and more…) The workshop is geared more toward adults, but we have hosted students as young as 15. The agenda includes all day instruction, song critiques, multiple workshop choices on varied songwriting and performing topics, public open mics and tremendous networking opportunities with  fellow instructors and like songwriters.

Fundraisers were held in 2012 and 2013 in the month of January surrounding the Sundance Film Festival and Access Film-Music showcase.  These events were all day workshops for the songwriters followed by public benefit concerts to raise funds for the program’s continuance.  These concerts were some of  IAMA’s best attended concerts during those years.  Former performing artists and instructors have been:  James Moors, Kort McCumber, Ellis, Dana Hubbard, Rj Cowdery, Matt Harlan and Chicago Mike Beck.  At present the IAMA Songwriter Academy is holding its own, fully self funded by the participants.  Future fundraisers will be held on an as needed basis to continue the Academy in future years.

Special thanks to our previous and continued sponsors:  IAMA, Ruthie Naccarato - Ricochet House Concerts, Snowbird, Salt Lake City Sound Guys and the Gallivan Center.  We are very excited about our 2014 sponsor – The Utah Arts Festival who will team up IAMA and the Salt Lake Public Library to host us for the 7th consecutive year.

Please visit IAMA SONGWRITER ACADEMY on Facebook for details and updates regarding all of our future academy events.  We cannot continue this outstanding program for our songwriting community without continued interest and support from our songwriters.  Please spread the word and please come back!
