HISTORY:
The IAMA Songwriter Academy (formerly known as the Snowbird Song School) started back in 2008.  The event has been marketed and organized by Ruthie Naccarato of Ricochet House Concerts since the beginning.  This comprehensive, 3 day songwriting workshop was held at Snowbird Resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon  for the  4 years in conjunction with the 20th Anniversary Founders Title Co. Folk and Bluegrass Festival/Snowbird Mountain Music Festival.  Steve Seskin was our original instructor, later joined by Craig Carothers and several other national and regional touring songwriters who presented additional workshops.  (Catie Curtis, Ellis, Wil Maring, Mitch Barrett, Dana Hubbard and Russ Chapman)

In November of 2011 the event was officially, proudly re-named the IAMA SONGWRITER ACADEMY.  All details of this program now fall under our own IAMA umbrella.  At present, Ruthie Naccarato remains the chair and coordinator for this event.

The event will continue to be held annually in conjunction with the IAMA Free Folk and Bluegrass Festival at the Gallivan Center in downtown, Salt Lake City. Instructors will vary from year to year to add variety and bring new ideas and expertise to our new and returning students.  Over 100 songwriters from Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Idaho, Massachusetts and Ohio have joined us for this event in previous years.  Many of our students have gone on to produce first class recordings and build brilliant songwriting careers for themselves.  (Alicia McGovern, Shaney McCoy, Jen Hajj, Karsyn Robb and more…) The workshop is geared more toward adults, but we have hosted students as young as 15 years of age.  The agenda includes all day instruction, song critiques, multiple workshop choices on varied songwriting and performing topics, song circles, open mics and tremendous networking opportunities with their fellow instructors and like songwriters.

A fundraiser is typically held in the month of January surrounding the Sundance Film Festival and Access Film-Music showcase.  This is an all day workshop for the songwriters followed by a public  benefit concert to raise funds for the program’s continuance.  The benefit concert has been one of IAMA’s best attended concerts the last two years.  Former performing artists and instructors have been:  James Moors, Kort McCumber, Ellis, Mary McAdams, Dana Hubbard, Rj Cowdery, Matt Harlan and Chicago Mike Beck.
Special thanks to our previous and continued sponsors:  Ricochet House Concerts, Snowbird, Salt Lake City Sound Guys and especially - IAMA and the Gallivan Center.

Stay tuned for details re: the 6th Annual IAMA Songwriter Academy on July 19-20, 2013 to be held at the Gallivan Center in conjunction with the IAMA Free Folk and Bluegrass festival this year.  Instructors have been chosen.  Steve Seskin is returning for a 5th year.  He will be joined by Kate MacLeod and Amy Speace.  See I.A.M.A. Songwriter Academy on facebook.
